Ano, politika nás velmi zajímá. Můj otec byl učitelem dějepisu a politologie a vštěpoval mi lásku k politickému systému. Je velmi zajímavé sledovat americkou politiku v jiné zemi. Určitě jsme získali širší pohled. Myslím si, že moje zodpovědnost jako občana je být informovanou voličkou. Tento rok byl pro nás dobrý, protože jsme byli v Texasu během voleb, takže jsme mohli volit osobně a ne korespondenčně. Upozorním vás na jeden kulturní rozdíl. Mimo rodinu obvykle nemluvíme o tom, koho volíme :-)
Kde se cítíme jako doma? Do České republiky jsme se přestěhovali před 10 lety a jako doma jsme se cítili téměř okamžitě. Určitě musíme překonávat mnohé výzvy, naše děti jsou zde docela spokojené. Náš nejstarší syn se oženil s milou a krásnou českou dívkou a spolu žijí v Plzní. Naše starší dcera navštěvuje Západočeskou univerzitu a plánuje zůstat v České republice. Nejmladší dcera tento rok jedno pololetí chodila do školy v Texasu, byla to pro ni skvělá zkušenost a mysleli jsme, že nebude chtít odjet. Ale na konci pololetí byla nadšená, že se vrací zpátky ke svým přátelům a domů sem do Plzně.
Yes, politics is very interesting to us. My dad was a history and political science teacher and he instilled a love of the political system in me. It has been very interesting to follow US politics from another country. We have definitely gained a broader perspective. We think it is our responsibility as a citizen to be an informed voter. It was nice for us this year because we were in Texas during the election, so we could vote in person and not have to mail in our ballot. We will teach you about one cultural difference – outside of the family, we typically don’t talk about who we voted for :-)
Where do we feel home? We moved to the Czech Republic 10 years ago and we felt at home almost immediately. While there are definitely some challenges for us, our children also are quite content here. Our son married a sweet and beautiful Czech girl and they also live in Plzen. Our oldest daughter attends University of Western Bohemia and plans to stay in the country. Our youngest daughter attended school in Texas for one semester this year. It was such a great experience for her and we thought she would not want to leave. But at the end of the semester, she was excited to come back to her friends and home here in Plzen.
Zmrzlina umíme :-) Ale na obranu vašeho přítele - čeština je velmi těžká. Musíme se hodně učit, abychom se naučili česky. Jsem si jistá, že se budeme učit po zbytek našeho života. Určitě by bylo možné tady žít pouze s angličtinou, ale jsem vděčná, že můžeme komunikovat česky. Mnoho našich dobrých přátel nemluví anglicky. Pokud bychom nemluvili česky, přišli bychom o příležitost poznat skvělé lidi. Takže úsilí určitě stojí za to. Naštěstí je to jednodušší pro naše děti, které mluví česky lépe než my.
Zmrzlina umime :-) but in defense of your friend, Czech is very difficult to learn. We have worked very hard to learn Czech, but I am sure we will be learning it the rest of our lives. It would certainly be possible to get by here with just English, but I am thankful that we can communicate in Czech. Many of our very good friends do not speak English, and we would have missed out on getting to know some incredible people had we not learned Czech. So it has definitely been worth the effort. Fortunately it has been much easier for our children who speak much better that we do.
Pro nás je zajímavé porovnávat systém více politických stran ve srovnáním se systém dvou stran, který je v USA. Systém dvou velkých stran centralizuje moc, zatímco teoreticky systém více politických stran by měl umožnit většímu množství lidí podílet se na vládě. Ale zdá se, že v obou dvou systémech jsou u moci stejní lidé.
What is interesting to us is the multi-partied system here compared to the two-party system in the US. The two-party system centralizes the power, while theoretically the multi-partied system allows more people to have a voice in government. However, it seems that in both systems, the same people are always in control.
Tento rok bude English camp v týdnu, kdy je 4. července. Takže tento den budeme slavit s každým na English Campu. Jsem si jistá, že tento den určitě uslyšíte hodně Američanů v Plzni. :)
This year our English camp takes place during the week of July 4, so we will celebrate that day with everyone at camp. And I am sure you will be able to hear lots of Americans that day all around Plzen :-)
